We’re excited to announce that we’ve just added over 20,000 applications from Handango. From multimedia and games to productivity apps and utilities, you can find nearly anything you want and download it quickly to your mobile device. Using Mobicious, you can now search, preview, and learn more about these applications. While some of the more advanced programs can be a bit pricey, we were pleasantly surprised to find a number of great ones that didn’t cost a dime. And really, who doesn’t love free stuff?
We spent some time this week to try out some of the apps:
* We love the idea of having a fast Gmail app running directly on the phone. One nice aspect was how similar the app is to the web-based Gmail account. The setup is very familiar and includes both the search and conversation functions (two of Gmail’s most important features). The app syncs directly to your web-based account so that everything is the same no matter if you check your email through your phone or through your computer. This program works on Java-enabled handsets, so if you don’t have a Java-enabled handset, then check out the Gmail mobile website . The best thing about Gmail is that the application is completely free.
* On the pricier side of things, there’s Oops I’m Late (at a whopping $69.99), which could be VERY useful for those of us who like to sleep in late. The app runs on Pocket PCs and uses GPS to detect if you are running late and sends notifications to the people that you select on your phone. Perfect for those of us who are constantly on-the-go.
* And just in case you weren’t already addicted to your mobile phone, you can find enough games to keep you occupied so that you never have to get anything done. In addition to basic games such as Pac-Man, hangman, Sudoku, etc., there are mentally taxing games like Spb Brain Evolution . This game, which claims it is the #1 best selling Pocket PC game, helps to improve your mental ability and measures your brain status in two independent game modes. The game also includes 10 development mini-games for developing your mental skills. Kind of odd, but seems to be interesting.
* If you want something a little less intense and a bit more fun, Bejeweled 2 is a popular game in which you simply have to match colored jewels in lines of three horizontally or vertically to clear them from the board. Although it sounds pretty simple, the game has decent graphics and design, and before I knew it, I had been sucked into the game for over 20 minutes.
Another great thing about all of these programs is that they include free trials! So you don’t have to commit $50 to an application without trying it out first.
Some things to look out for: applications aren’t available for all phones. As you may know, Handango caters to smart phones, so if you have a regular run-of-the-mill flip phone, you won’t find a ton of stuff. Luckily, we’re hard at work at Mobicious finding other places where you can get both free and premium applications for all types of phones. So stay tuned!
